The European Commission has approved 71 out of 133 applications for funding under the Youth programme. Total grant aid for the projects will be almost 1.5 million euros. The Commission was pleased with the overall quality of applications. However, only two of the 29 so-called "large-scale" projects were approved. Most of the others did not comply with the strict application criteria. The call for large-scale projects was designed to ensure a smooth transition from the old Youth for Europe programme to the new Youth programme, and targeted longer-lasting and broader projects than usual. The Youth programme (2000-06) will have a 520 million euro budget. It supports foreign visits for young people, European Voluntary Service, initiatives planned and implemented by young people individually or in groups, and training for adults responsible for young people.
