The University of Central England has successfully bid to develop a prototype foundation degree in construction and property. It will enable selected colleges to work with universities to deliver high-quality vocational programmes, locally. The foundation degree is designed to last for two years. It will provide a route to an honours degree, either immediately after the foundation degree or after a period of employment. Foundation-degree graduates will be able to complete an honours degree with an additional year, or four terms of study. The move has been welcomed by the Construction Industry Training Board, the Construction Industry Council and the Construction Confederation. It is a direct outcome of an industry workshop which identified the core elements needed for construction and the built environment foundation degrees.

Meanwhile, as part of the Construction Industry Training Board's drive to attract young people into the construction industry, it has teamed up with fast-food giant McDonald's to launch a new learning pack for schools designed to give young people a greater understanding and appreciation of construction and the built environment. The pack has been produced to help teachers to offer a realistic approach to mathematics and technology lessons. Focusing on these subjects, "Building a Restaurant" provides opportunities to link with other subject areas and will help with the delivery of the national curriculum, national numeracy strategy and GNVQ induction programmes. It also forms part of the Construction Industry Training Board's construction-award scheme.
