South-East England spearheads literacy and numeracy drive

South-East England Development Agency is investing £1 million in 11 projects to improve literacy and numeracy in the workplace. The agency is helping local and national organizations to train tutors and deliver workplace-learning programmes. More than 20 per cent of the adult population in south-east England have difficulties with basic literacy and numeracy skills and over half the adult population is in jobs with little prospect of progressing beyond low-skill work.

Professor John Parsonage, the agency's director of learning and skills, said: "The changing pattern of employment has shown a dramatic decline in low-skill jobs. If we are to develop a world-class workforce and inclusive society we must improve the basic skills of employees, and the skills base of the region as a whole". The agency aims to have 101,000 people in south-east England completing accredited training by 2004.
