Commission backs plan to extend Tempus programme

The European Commission has backed a plan to extend the Tempus programme of higher-education co-operation to Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, the Palestinian Authority, Syria and Lebanon. The move will be funded under the Meda programme. Some E21.5 million a year will be available in 2003 and 2004. The current Tempus programme (2000-2006) supports higher-education co-operation with Albania, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, the Russian Federation, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Mongolia. The programme supports joint projects between universities in at least two EU member states and one from the list of eligible countries. There is also money for teachers, researchers and other higher-education specialists to pay a short visit to one of the partner countries. Such visits should seek to improve the quality of university education and help to speed reform.

The European Commission has also approved new European projects and requests for scholarships worth E30 million under the Tempus programme of higher-education co-operation. The money will fund 46 projects and 48 scholarships, worth a total E14.1 million, for teachers and students in the western Balkans, and 43 projects and 73 scholarships, worth a total E15.3 million, for eastern Europe and central Asia. Details of the successful applications are available from Christophe Forax, on Tel: 00 32 2 295 6964.
