Language-teaching methods in the spotlight

The European Forum of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (EFVET) and a team of European colleges are seeking to develop new approaches to teaching languages. They aim to develop new ready-to-use materials, and compile a video library on DVD for language teachers to see the language-teaching methods used in real classes across Europe. There will also be advice on the better use of existing materials. In Denmark there is a trend towards students working individually, often taking responsibility for their own learning using computer-assisted language techniques. This means that teacher-based lessons must focus on communication activities.

More information is available on the internet, at http://www.languages.dk/methods/ The Web site also facilitates contacts between native speakers of different languages, encouraging people to learn through communication. The idea is to provide a "give and take" solution, where everyone is both a teacher of his or her own language and student of a foreign language. Further information is available from the Tandem Partner area of the Web site http://www.languages.dk/tandem
