Parents ignorant of post-result options
Parents ignorant of post-result options
More than half (54 per cent) of all parents do not know what options are available to their children when they leave school, according to a survey conducted on behalf of the Learning and Skills Council. Many parents fear broaching the subject of further education and careers with their teenagers – 70 per cent saying that their attempts to do so lead to arguments and accusations of interference. Despite this, 74 per cent say they feel the decision is so crucial they will intervene if they think their sons or daughters are pursuing the wrong education or career path.
The Learning and Skills Council offers parents advice about handling the difficult period when examination results fall through the letterbox. The LSC also highlights the option of vocational training through modern apprenticeships as an alternative to the academic route. Modern apprenticeships are a work-based learning option for young people, enabling them to earn and gain a qualification at the same time.
