Commission approves measures to improve youth employment in France

The European Commission has approved new youth-employment support measures in France, which target people aged 16 to 22 who have not obtained qualifications in general, technical or vocational education and training. Firms of any size and in any sector and geographical area of France that take on one of these young people indefinitely are entitled to grants ranging from 225 to 292.50 a month for the first two years, and half of this in year three. The measure is expected to cost 200 million in 2003, rising to 650 million in 2006, when it is expected to have its greatest impact. The Commission notes that the measure satisfies its employment-aid conditions and that the group of workers concerned is one of the social categories EU member states have been called upon to help.
