Internationalisation and Changing Skills Needs in European Small Firms

European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training, Office for Official Publications of the European Communities2002ISBN 9289601019E8.50

Presents the results of a survey carried out on the changing skill needs of small companies in Austria, Greece, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands, Spain and Britain. Suggests that "pull" factors are much more important in convincing small firms to "go international" than "push" factors – in other words, the attractiveness of foreign markets is more important than urging by government. Demonstrates that small firms seem to favour developing new skills through on-the-job training: they prefer to learn by doing and to learn from other companies – preferably other small firms that have experienced similar difficulties.
