Qualifications directive discussed
Qualifications directive discussed
Ministers responsible for promoting competitiveness in the EU member states discussed a proposed EU directive that would merge into a single text the 15 existing directives on the recognition of professional qualifications. The directive would reduce from 300 to 60 the number of articles devoted to the mutual recognition of qualifications attained by doctors, nurses, dentists, veterinary surgeons, midwives, pharmacists and architects.
Most ministers spoke in favour of simplifying the system of committees responsible for preparing decisions on the mutual recognition of qualifications, but Germany considered that a single committee risked not having sufficient expertise in all fields. Italy and Luxembourg suggested a single committee whose composition would change according to the area being discussed. Most member states also wanted information on migrants to be improved.
