Education ministers meet trade union and employer representatives

Education ministers meet trade union and employer representatives

The first steps have been taken towards organizing regular formal meetings between European education ministers and trade-union and employer representatives. The Greek, Danish and Italian education ministers met trade-union and employer representatives before a recent Education Council session. The meeting mirrors similar meetings that already exist in the area of employment.

Viviane Reding, European Commissioner responsible for education and training, said that the "immense" challenges facing education and training systems highlighted the need to "bring all our forces together to guarantee the necessary balance between, on the one hand, the requirements in terms of qualifications and skills dictated by the economy and, on the other, the development of active citizens capable of playing a role in social inclusion".

The meeting was welcomed by Mrs Reding, the ministers and the employer and trade-union representatives.
