Make graduates more employable, urges Reding
More co-operation is needed between government, education and business to make graduates more employable, says Viviane Reding, European commissioner responsible for education and training.
"Many higher-education institutions in the EU live in an ivory tower with too few links to the labour market and especially to the private sector, even though most of their students will enter this world after graduation", Mrs Reding told Slovenian policy makers and representatives of the academic community. She said that "work experience gained before graduation was an 'essential component' for the transfer of theory into practical knowledge. Sending students on placements with enterprises within Europe increases links with industry. The additional benefits of this can be help in research and development, joint projects, up-to-date knowledge of a particular industry, sharing practices and the ability to update the curriculum."
