Germany reduces length of some training courses

Germany is set to cut the amount of time it takes people to qualify for work in a number of occupations where manpower is scarce. Two-year qualifications are likely to be introduced in a wide range of areas, from manufacturing to recycling and from nursing to logistics. Most training programmes in Germany currently last between three and three and a half years. The move, which would involve less theoretical training but the same amount of practical training, has been recommended by the Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry, and taken up by the Federal Institute for Vocational Training. Around a quarter of trainees currently drop out of the longer training programmes, leaving around 14 per cent of young people with no formal qualifications.
