More students choose careers in media over engineering

More students are ditching a career in engineering and plumping for more “glamorous” jobs in other vocations such as the media, according to a poll by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE)

The IMechE asked: “Are students choosing engineering as a career as opposed to one in teaching or the media, for example?” Results show that 53 per cent said no, 23 per cent said yes and 24 per cent were undecided.

While current educational trends still show that subjects such as the arts are more popular than the sciences, engineering has earned itself a reputation as being one of the more stable and lucrative careers around. A salary survey conducted by the Engineering Council in 2003 showed that, on average, a chartered engineer could earn roughly the same as a lawyer or an accountant. The survey also highlighted that 12 of the FTSE 100 companies were led by engineers and 20 were led by accountants.
