Euro-MP backs wider remit for Erasmus
The EU should introduce an Erasmus scheme for secondary-school pupils and for young entrepreneurs, says the Euro-MP who is rapporteur for the 2006 EU budget. Gianni Pittella, of the Italian Socialist group, indicated in a press release that he had identified education, training and youth as priorities in helping the EU to meet its Lisbon strategy objectives of becoming the most competitive knowledge-based economy in the world by 2010. He said that creation of a “European lifelong education and training area” would make it easier for people to move from apprenticeships to the world of work, and to move freely between EU regions and countries in order best to use their skills and qualifications. Mr Pittella has set three priorities: strengthening the funding of programmes that benefit young people; pushing forward reforms planned for 2007 in the European Pact for Youth; and extending the EU’s Erasmus higher-education programme to cover secondary-school pupils and young entrepreneurs.
