Three countries join the European University Institute

Cyprus, Slovenia and Slovakia have joined the European University Institute – an intergovernmental institution founded more than 30 years ago to contribute, through postgraduate education and research, to the development of Europe’s cultural and scientific heritage. Jan Figel, European Commissioner for Education and Training, visited the Institute in Florence to mark the admission of the three new states. He said: “Centres of learning like the European University Institute are important for the future of higher education in Europe, because they give depth and perspective to the issues that stir the European debate.” The Institute’s new post-doctoral programme aims to encourage more young scholars to remain in Europe rather than seek opportunities abroad.
