Europe’s education system “is declining”

Europe seems to be suffering from innovation fatigue and a certain decline in its educational system, according to Poland’s former foreign minister. Bronislaw Geremek, now a Euro-MP, told a conference involving more than 300 Europeans from the worlds of politics, academia and the arts, held in Salzburg, Austria: “Education, research and innovation must not be left solely in the hands of national governments. Europe must invest in citizens’ knowledge – research and education.”

Austrian chancellor Wolfgang Schussel told the conference, entitled “The Sound of Europe”, that education and innovation were Europe’s principal raw materials and measures must be taken to stem the “brain drain” from Europe to the USA. Javier Solana, the EU high representative for the common foreign and security policy, argued for a large increase in the Erasmus budget, devoted to exchanges in higher education.
