Euro-MPs welcome plans for European indicator of linguistic competences

Euro-MPs have welcomed Commission proposals for a European indicator of linguistic competence, which would measure people's ability to read, listen to, speak and write foreign languages.

MEPs consider that the tool should match other, similar international tools for measuring competence in foreign languages. In particular, it should be used to register the competence of a sample of the population at each of the six levels in the Council of Europe's common European reference framework for languages, which several EU member states already use.

Euro-MPs believe that the new European indicator will not only help the Commission to collect information on language competence among young people, but it will also enable comparisons to be made among EU member states and facilitate the exchange of good practice.

MEPs also want the EU to step up efforts to reach the objective set during the Barcelona Council meeting in 2002 of helping people to become fluent in two or more foreign languages.
