New eight-year agreement approved for EU-US higher-education co-operation
The European Council has approved an agreement for co-operation between the EU and the USA on higher education and vocational training. The agreement should last eight years initially and will replace the 2000 co-operation programme. The new programme, named Atlantis, aims to support cultural understanding and human-resource development, including the skills needed in a global, knowledge-based economy. It will be used to establish double or joint “trans-Atlantic” degrees at undergraduate level. Financial support will be provided to help to run the consortia and to provide mobility grants for students and scholars. Participating institutions could also benefit from the programme by examining the best mixture of resources from all sides to increase the quality of training offered to students.
