The Economic and Social Research Council: festival and resources

The Festival of Social Science celebrated the social sciences with events across the UK from 9-18 March 2007. The ESRC Festival gives a fascinating insight into some of the country’s leading social science research and how it influences our social, economic and political lives-both now and in the future. From big ideas to the most detailed observations, social science affects us all everyday-at work, in school, when bringing up children, when we are ill, even when we retire. More information is available at: www.esrcfestival.ac.uk/

ESRC Society Today offers free access to a broad range of social science research and presents it in a way that makes it easy to navigate and saves users valuable time. As well as bringing together all ESRC-funded research and key online resources such as the Social Science Information Gateway and the UK Data Archive, non-ESRC resources are included, for example the Office for National Statistics. The portal provides access to early findings and research summaries, as well as full texts and original datasets through integrated search facilities. To find out more, see: www.esrcsocietytoday.ac.uk/

The Question Bank, funded by the ESRC, provides an online resource for the social science community covering issues about professional social survey data collection, social measurement using surveys, and information about the design of survey questionnaires. The Question Bank aims to help bridge the gap between academics and professional survey agencies. To find out more, see: http://qb.soc.surrey.ac.uk/

DVD on research supervision

Based on the book of the same title (ACL, 2004, ISBN 0-9547096-0-8), “Research Supervision for Supervisors and their Students” explains how to assess if you are likely to be an effective supervisor and addresses how to identify “good” research students. For research degree students it explains what can be expected from the supervisor, and explains how the academic research process may be managed so that the supervisor and the student both understand what is required and when it is required. The DVD discusses in detail how masters and doctoral degrees are evaluated and gives tips on how to make sure that the examiners will be satisfied both by the dissertation and also during the viva.
