Birmingham based Construction Industry Publications (CIP) has joined forces with the National Access Scaffolding Contractors (NASC) to improve safety for scaffold workers.

Scaffolders' falls and accidents not only cost employers in work days lost, it is estimated that 79 construction employees actually die at work every year – and half of those deaths are from falls.

Guidance note SG4:00 The Use of Fall Arrest Equipment whilst Erecting, Altering and Dismantling Scaffolding has been devised to make scarfolders' work safer.

It is a pocket size document which clearly explains, with the use of diagrams, how scaffolders must now wear and use safety harnesses when erecting, altering or dismantling scaffolding.

The NASC has already distributed copies of the guide to HSE Construction Inspectors nationwide so all site inspections will now enforce the SG4:00 guidelines.

This guidance document represents a major step forward by the NASC to prevent falls to scaffolders. It is a highly practical guide that is simple to follow and will undoubtedly reduce the risk of falls.

SG4:00, priced at £6.00 (plus P&P, send cheque with order), is available directly from CIP by telephoning CIP +44 (0)121 722 8200 or visiting the Web site at www.cip-books.com

CIP, of 60 New Coventry Road, Sheldon in Birmingham, is one of the UK's major publishers of contracts and other titles for the construction industry.
