NeoCon – World's Trade Fair 2001 The World's Trade Fair for Interior Design and Facilities Management

18-20 June The Merchandise Mart, Chicago, USA

Featuring nearly 1,000 exhibitors and 125 accredited seminars, NeoCon is one of those rare events that is at once a trusted institution (of over 30 years), and the national forum for showcasing the newest products for the contract furnishings industry that it serves.

New trend: work as community

With the introduction of radically new product lines by Herman Miller (Resolve) and Haworth (iF) in last year's show, producers anticipate that other manufacturers will follow suit in 2001, creating a full-scale design trend that addresses workplace social dynamics.

While teamwork and collaboration continue to be important themes in product design, the broader issue of community is taking center stage for NeoCon 2001. "Interest in and necessity for work as community refreshes the challenge and opportunity of modulating the space between base architecture and the individual", noted Wayne Susag, design specialist, Herman Miller. This means that designers and manufacturers will focus on group-oriented spaces, such as updated meeting rooms and even workplace cafes, as well as flexible workstations that allow for knowledge-sharing.

New designers: "What is the greatest design challenge of the twenty-first century?"

Emerging designers respond to this question in the first annual NeoCon Undergraduate Scholarship competition, sponsored by MMPI and the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Foundation. The NeoCon Scholarship allows two interior design students to experience the industry's premier event – NeoCon World's Trade Fair – as presenters, as well as receive funds to support their interior design education. The applicants for the scholarship will be judged based on an essay, resume and an official transcript of coursework.
