This book belongs to the ‘‘Social aspects of AIDS’’ series, which is edited by Peter Aggleton. In the Series Editor’s Preface, Peter Aggleton summarises succintly why this book is useful. In many ways, he says, The Netherlands’ response to HIV and AIDS, unlike that of several other European countries and the US, was ‘‘exemplary and it is a privilege to publish a book describing the nature of that response, the factors which gave rise to it, and the lessons that can be learned’’. Much of what appears in the book is published here for the first time in English. Aggleton concludes: ‘‘If others can learn from the experiences described here, our goals will have been more than achieved.’’

Divided into three parts, this book begins with ‘‘HIV prevention strategies and outcomes’’ before considering ‘‘Policy issues’’ and then reporting on some ‘‘Original studies’’. There will be something of interest here for everyone who is interested in the possible responses to HIV infection, and the various ways that health promotion strategies can help in controlling its spread.
