Use of e-learning "growing steadily"

A steady growth in the use of electronic learning was reported at the Online Learning 2002 Europe conference, held at the ExCel conference centre in London's Docklands.

Delegates at the event, from almost 30 countries, were told that information-technology (IT) skills training represented the largest area of use, followed by process and production skills, sales and marketing.

Several speakers highlighted the need to focus on developing the capability of trainers in the development, use and support of e-learning. Case studies demonstrated the returns available from making this key investment.

An employee of SAS Cargo, the freight division of Scandinavian Airlines System, discussed its innovative, simulation-led learning programme for leadership development that has delivered sustained behavioural change and improved business performance and profitability.

Carol Strohecker, of Media Lab Europe, used the analogy of intuition-building toys such as Etch-a-Sketch and Spirograph to provide an insight into her research in the use of electronic media to support people in maximizing learning effectiveness.

The educational and economic potential of virtual corporate universities was addressed by organizations including the City & Guilds Institute, Cisco and IBM. The ability to reach the learner and to provide appropriate learning methods were highlighted as key benefits. IBM reported savings of $24 million in 2000 on a single management-development programme.
