Celtic Knots trains ferry personnel
Colleges in Wales and Ireland have developed joint training programmes for Irish Ferries employees, under the European Union (EU) Interreg programme, which aims to foster co-operation between frontier regions.
The training, named Celtic Knots, involves Dublin Institute of Technology, in Ireland, and the Colg Menai, in Wales. It was developed according to the British system of national vocational qualifications (NVQs), which was considered most appropriate because it is based on real working conditions at sea.
Two surveys were conducted before the training began. Three programmes were then developed to cover food preparation and hygiene, customer service and management and inspection. The EU contributed 887,000 to the 1,682,000 cost.
More than 150 NVQs have so far been awarded to Irish Ferries employees, who crew ships that ply from Dublin and Rosslare to Holyhead and Pembroke. The colleges are now exploring the possibility of extending the training to other ferry operators.
