Atkins opens Vauxhall Training Center

Article Type: Notes and news From: Industrial and Commercial Training, Volume 41, Issue 7

The UK’s largest engineering and design consultancy officially opened its Vauxhall Training Center when it held an open day at the facility.

Music producer and rail enthusiast Pete Waterman was accompanied by Atkins chief executive Keith Clarke in officially opening the center, which has four large purpose-designed classrooms, all fitted with ceiling-mounted projectors, with an extra classroom for assessments and smaller groups.

Those who attended the open day were able to learn more about Atkins’ wide range of course options, discuss training needs and bespoke programs, have a guided tour of the site and take part in a question-and-answer session with a panel of experienced trainers.

The company’s Network Rail training at Vauxhall includes all core competencies, specialist courses and now track-induction and core-planner courses. London Underground training is also offered, as well as tailor-made courses in the health and safety sector, including the safety-passport program.

Commenting on the importance of safe working practice in the industry, Keith Clarke said: “Good training and sound technical skills are vital to safe working but no less than empowering everybody to act responsibly and stop when in doubt. A safe culture is one when all are respected.”

Vauxhall is the second of Atkins’ training centers. A facility in Derby also provides classrooms with a separate assessment room and is enhanced by outdoor-demonstration equipment.
