Article Type: Notes and news From: Industrial and Commercial Training, Volume 45, Issue 2

Training programs at the Rocco Forte Brown’s Hotel won the company the SME HR Initiative of the Year prize at the latest Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development awards.

The hotel’s HR team recently launched several initiatives to train, enthuse and retain staff at different levels.

“We have a strong training culture at Brown’s and recognize the importance of motivation from the executive team down,” said Stuart Johnson, general manager. “We have created training initiatives to inspire and enthuse our valuable team, which have already resulted in increased business and better staff retention.”

The Nourish Leadership program was created to develop the skills of managers and provide them with an HR tool-kit and a qualification to motivate them to meet business objectives.

Junior and assistant managers attended the Discovery program to develop management skills while retaining the managers in the business and earmarking them for succession.

The HR team also initiated an Unrivalled Customer Service program to give team members the opportunity to learn new skills and gain a National Vocational Qualification in customer service.

The training has contributed to a positive culture change, with consideration of diversity and inclusion being important to its success,” commented the CIPD. “The passion, tenacity and resilience of the HR team in driving forward improvements through progressive techniques, overcoming the barriers of a very traditional mind-set to achieve this, were evident throughout this entry and were integral to the team’s success in this category.”
