Poland sells first surplus Kyoto carbon credits

Poland signed a deal with Spain to sell €25 million worth of AAUs or surplus carbon credits it has accumulated under the Kyoto Protocol. The revenue from the sale will be invested in greenhouse gas emission reduction projects. This is Poland’s first AAU sale. Those involved in the deal did not disclose how many AAUs were sold or for what price. Over the past year, AAUs have fetched prices from €5.05 to €14/tonne, analyst Point Carbon reports. Poland is estimated to be third largest holder of surplus Kyoto carbon credits after Russia and Ukraine. The European Investment Bank believes Poland has about 500 million AAUs.
