What does it take for a company to be a winner in a changing world? This is the central question addressed in this book by former Honeywell International CEO Larry Bossidy and management guru Ram Charan. The same authors were responsible for Execution: The Discipline of Getting Things Done but seem to have taken a step “back” in deciding it is essential to plan effectively first! They offer a model for facing facts in three areas – external realities, internal realities, and financial targets – helping readers to see the big picture, how these areas are linked within that big picture and how to reassess them.

They start by discussing how to understand the most fundamental element of any business: whether it can realistically make money in the game being played. This involves a “reality check” – developing a robust process for thinking about the specifics of the business in a holistic way, tying together the financial targets with the external realities through internal activities such as strategy development, selection and development of people, setting operating tactics, etc.

They provide several case studies – from organisations such as Home Depot, 3M, Thomson Corporation and Cisco – that hold lessons about what to change and what not to change and they conclude with tips on how to prepare an organization for transformation.
