New LIFE funding for environment projects in Europe
The European Council of Ministers has issued a finalised text of the new Lifeþenvironmental project funding programme. The regulation confirms a programme budget of e2.14bn for 2007-2013. The figure has been revised upwards from the e1.9bn in the deal to account for inflation since the fund was proposed. At least three-quarters will be spent on project grants. Of that, at least half is earmarked for biodiversity projects. The European Commission will set “indicative national budget allocations” based on countries' population density and biodiversity.
