4th Global Environment Outlook: Environment for Development (GEO-4)

Article Type: News from the net From: International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education, Volume 9, Issue 2.

United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)

Published 20 years after the World Commission on Environment and Development (the Brundtland Commission) produced its seminal report, “Our Common Future, GEO-4” is the latest in UNEP's series of flagship reports. It assesses the current state of the global atmosphere, land, water and biodiversity, describes developments and changes since 1987, and identifies priorities for action.

GEO-4 has six sections and ten chapters, which provide an overview of global social and economic trends and the state-and-trends of the global and regional environments over the past two decades, as well as the human dimensions of these changes. It highlights the interlinkages as well as the challenges of environmental change and opportunities that the environment provides for human well-being. It provides an outlook for the future, and policy options to address present and emerging environmental issues.
