FCRN and Oxford Martin Report – “Sustainable Intensification in Agriculture: Navigating a Course through Competing Food System Priorities”

Article Type: News from the net From: International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education, Volume 14, Issue 1

The Food Climate Research Network (FCRN) and the Oxford Martin Programme on the Future of Food have jointly published a new report on Sustainable Intensification and Competing Priorities in Agriculture. The report is based on discussions between key thinkers from the academic and policy community at a two-day workshop in January 2012. The report is aimed at policy makers, both in the UK and internationally, working in areas relevant to food security. A key focus of the report is agricultural policy and how it intersects with environmental, animal welfare and health policies.

Whilst the report does not go so far as to make policy recommendations, it provides a critical analysis of the challenges that lie ahead, arguing for a more “systems” oriented approach to decision making, and recommending that agricultural policy needs to operate in a more integrated manner with other policy areas if it is to help rather than hinder progress towards the ultimate goal of food security.
