The Gulf story

The Gulf story

The sale of Gulf Oil, the San Francisco-based subsidiary of Chevron Oils, to Shell was completed last November. With it ended a tradition of motor sport sponsorship which began at Indianapolis in 1938. Gulf's powder blue and orange livery had adorned several different cars. Notable were the JW team GT40s, which won the Sports Car Championship in 1968 and scored consecutive victories in the Le Mans 24-hour race. Gulf retired from full-time European sports car sponsorship after the 1975 Le Mans victory of the Ford powered Gulf Mirage in 1975. Shell has acquired the Gulf retail network and commercial business including distributors, fuels and the whole of Gulf lubricants. However, in the short term there should be no change in the way Gulf conducts its business.
