Tribology, the science of interacting surfaces, encompasses the fields of friction, lubrication and wear. The word tribology has its origin in the Greek word tribos which means rubbing. The term "tribology" has been in use for less than 50 years; but the problems associated with components in contact have been around since the birth of civilisation. One example of an early tribologist is the one who discovered that it was easier to roll a heavy load on logs rather than drag it across the ground. Almost every item of modern machinery has moving parts such as bearings, gears, slides, seals, etc. The successful operation of mechanical equipment is heavily dependent on the smooth running and long life of these parts. Research in the field of tribology helps to improve reliability and longevity in industrial machines. In recent decades, research in this field in Korea has blossomed with the goal of upgrading the quality of Korean-made products, and keeping pace with the rapid development of modern technology. This report discusses activities of the Tribology Research Centre (TRC), a part of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST).
