New centre will oil the wheels of industry

A dedicated research centre to improve the quality of oil in our engines opened on 28 January 1998 at De Montfort University .

Vice Chancellor Professor Kenneth Barker CBE opened the new Lubricant Research Centre at the Cardigan Building, Newarke Close, Leicester. The centre will help DMU to continue building on its long-standing links with industry.

The Lubricant Test Centre comprises three engine test cells, fuel supplies, an engine fitting area, a laboratory for analysing oil samples and also office space. The university's highly regarded research projects will continue and allow the team to further diversify into the development of commercial lubricant testing.

The centre is a dedicated facility where chemists and engineers will be able to work together, students will be able to study for postgraduate qualifications, specially aimed at the lubricant and automotive industries, and there will be opportunities for specialised research.

"This is a great new facility", said Professor Malcolm Fox, Head of the Lubricant Research Centre. "Our work can be noisy and the special test cells that we have at the new centre will help to reduce and control much of what is produced. Later this year we plan to extend our brief by launching Distance Learning MSc courses specifically tailored to the plastics and polymers, and lubricants and hydraulics industries."
