Automotive lubricants

Automotive lubricants account for some 50 per cent of the total volume of lubricants sold in the UK, and there are literally hundreds of brands available, although probably less than 50 manufacturers as such. Many brands are marketed by supermarkets and specialist motoring stores under their own brand name but are supplied from other manufacturers. This summary is limited to crankcase motor oils primarily designed for four-stroke engines. Viscosity classifications are listed, also API and ACEA performance specifications where appropriate, but these are minima specifications only. The summary also includes a very brief description of the application area.

Many of the products listed below exceed these API and ACEA requirements, some by a considerable margin, and may also carry approvals by a variety of vehicle manufacturers who impose their own particular requirements.
