Waste minimisation in the German surface finishing industry

Waste minimisation in the German surface finishing industry

Keywords Finishing, Effluent

The German aqueous surface finishing industry has been subject to well-defined national, state and local regulations pertaining to the environment and waste minimisation for several years. National law limits trade effluent discharge to levels which are substantially lower than that set by UK water service plcs. Similarly, every effort must be made to avoid the production of solid waste and, where this is not possible, to seek out uses for the waste. The German technology approach to waste minimisation and environmental compliance will form a practical and minimum cost base for the UK aqueous finishing industry, so concludes the report of a best-practice mission to Germany during March/April 1998, organised by the Surface Engineering Association (SEA) and supported by the DTI.
