Stirling Engine Co. Ltd has developed a new type of external combustion engine that uses agricultural and forestry wastes such as rice husks or sawdust as fuel. The air inside the cylinders is heated and cooled to move the pistons; these revolve the crankshaft at a rate of 650rpm which drives a 3kW generator with a force of 5HP. The engine generates no exhaust gas, and permits effective utilisation of wooden wastes, so the engine is a clean type featuring low cost, and is anticipated to come into wide use.
