New plug-in couplings simplify connection and disconnection of hydraulic hose

Keywords: Couplers, Hydraulics, Hoses

Hydraulic hose is now much easier to connect and disconnect thanks to an ingenious new hydraulic coupling launched in the UK by Tom Parker of Preston. The couplings simply plug in to connect and are self-locking, so no further tightening is required (see Plates 7 and 8). Disconnection is enabled by removing a stop-clip and pushing the plug into its housing to release the catches; it may then be withdrawn in a single, smooth action. Designed and manufactured in Sweden by CEJN, the new range of WEO plug-in couplings make it possible to design more compact systems as no additional space is required for tooling access. The new design also allows the coupling to swivel freely, which eliminates the stresses that can arise during connection and therefore extends the life of the hose. The manufacturer also claims that the couplings will help contribute towards a cleaner environment, as quick-and-easy connection will reduce oil spills.

The new design has been patented by CEJN and the couplings have been tested by the Swedish Institute of Materials Testing and Research to SS-ISO 8032, half omega test. The working pressure for all couplings between 1/4in. and 3/4in. is 350bar; 1in. couplings are rated at 250bar.
