Bruel & Kjaer enters the scanning laser doppler vibrometer market

Bruel & Kjaer enters the scanning laser doppler vibrometer marketKeywords: Measurement, Vibration

Noise and vibration measurement specialist, Bruel & Kjaer has introduced the new state-of-the-art Ometron Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer (SLDV) Type 8330, a non-contact vibrometry system that offers key advantages over traditional methods which use surface-mounted vibration transducers.

SLDV Type 8330 is a highly accurate, compact and versatile, non-contact vibration measurement system for use in applications where it is impossible or undesirable to mount an array of accelerometers on a vibrating object. It is a full-field system that can quickly produce vibration maps depicting the structural response at multiple measurement points. In such applications, Type 8330 can save a great deal of time and produce more reliable results.

The SLDV's operation is based on a homodyne principle that offers a very high optical sensitivity and accuracy. The SLDV also features, in a single set-up, the ability to quickly measure multiple points with high spatial resolution, significantly reducing set-up and measurement time.

Type 8330 is a complete turnkey solution whose low weight and compact design make it suitable for both laboratory and field work. The system comprises just a sensor head and a PC. The PC is supplied pre-configured with a comprehensive data acquisition and analysis software package.

The scanning laser principle provides a very versatile means of data acquisition that can be applied to a wide variety of applications – industrial, medical, military and civil. These encompass experimental model analysis, determination of operational deflection shapes and detection of structural defects, amongst many others. The SLDV can be applied to practically all types of vibration measurement.

The new SLDV Type 8330 is a full-field system capable of producing vibration maps depicting structural response in very short periods of time. The software can control a vibration exciter and display the resulting structural response. Offering broadband input excitation to the structure under test, Type 8330 is ideal for applications such as operating machinery inspection, structural integrity assessment studies, analytical modelling, validation of FE (finite element) models, noise control, non-destructive inspection, quality assurance, condition monitoring, design studies and production assembly techniques, etc.

Specifications include maximum vibration velocity of 2000mm/s in five ranges (5, 20, 100, 500 and 2000mm/s), sensor vibration frequency range of <0.1Hz to 200kHz up to 100m/s and <0.1Hz to 2MHz up to 2000mm/s, working distance >200m (depending on surface finish) and spatial resolution of 1mm at 20m working distance.

The versatility of the Type 8330 is enhanced by its simple and user-friendly operator interface, its portability and its tolerance to a number of otherwise difficult measuring conditions. This enables the Type 8330 to be set up to produce accurate, reliable and consistent data that can be swiftly interpreted and used in the engineering decision making process.

Features include wide dynamic range, digital mirror drive control, high resolution mirror angle positioning (16-bit), full colour CCD camera image for background "wallpaper", dropout detection for fast re-scanning of positions with low S/N ratio, compact design with all electronics and optics in one unit, unique built-in self-diagnostic tools and easy interface to model analysis and operation deflection shapes software packages.

Type 8330 has evolved through Bruel & Kjaer's alliance with Ometron, leading world-wide supplier and pioneer of non-contact vibration and stress measurement equipment. Bruel & Kjaer has the exclusive rights to sell SLDV Type 8330 worldwide.

With over 55 years experience, Bruel & Kjaer is a world leading manufacturer and supplier of sound and vibration products for use in a wide range of applications including environmental noise measurements, building acoustics, vibration measurements and quality control for use in the automotive, aerospace and consumer industries as well as by local authorities.
