The Edinburgh Engineering Virtual Library (EEVL)

The EEVL is a project to build a gateway for the higher education and research community to facilitate access to high quality information resources in engineering. It provides free access via the Internet to engineering information, providing a central access point to networked resources via an impressive selection of search options. The EEVL's database of resources itself can be searched in a variety of ways, with the usual keyword search augmented with a comprehensive browsing facility allowing access via subject and resource type. The site also allows the viewing of the latest changes to the database items in addition to the most popular sites accessed. The engineering search engines cover UK Web pages, over 70 E-journals and a 40-day archive of news articles from various engineering newsgroups. In addition to the above, the site maintains a number of other specific resource lists, namelyrecent advances in manufacturing, offshore engineering, liquid crystals, jet impingement and engineering related Internet guides. The site functions well, and on the whole returns good quality hits from its searches, the database being maintained regularly.

The home page of the finishing industry

This site carries information about all aspects of finishing and finishing technology. Coverage includes all aspects of coatings, electroplating, polishing, spraying and painting. The site offers a live chat room for discussion and on-line help, directories of products and services, a mailing list, a multilingual dictionary of finishing terms and conference information. Full text original articles and FAQs offer a great deal of free advice and the site has lists of books both as a resource and for sale (including some preowned). In addition, there are links to related organisations and sites.

The Abrasive Engineering Society

The Abrasive Engineering Society is dedicated to the transfer of technical information about abrasives minerals and their uses. This includes abrasive grains and products such as grinding wheels, coated abrasives (sandpaper) and many others. In addition to membership details and contact information, their site includes a directory of manufacturers and distributors of abrasive products, a list of technical publications, tables of contents for their conference proceedings and information about educational and training opportunities. Abstracts of various technical papers and the full text of the Abrasives Mall Journal (currently including an article on robotic applications in surface finishing) provide a useful level of technical detail, in addition to a number of links to other related sites on the Internet.

PLC Tutor

The PLC Tutor provides a generic tutorial guide to programmable logic controllers. It offers an overview and history of the PLC, sections on theory of operation and programming, wiring, and links to plc manufacturers. Although written very informally, the information goes beyond a trivial introduction to the subject, offering for example rules of thumb when calculating timing requirements. The site's archive of its interactive question and answer session contains some snippets of variable utility, though if stuck with a PLC problem there is a facility for posting a query. The book of the site is available via the comprehensive online order form.

The On-Line Journal of Computer Controlled Systems

The On-Line Journal of Computer Controlled Systems is a resource forum that covers the four main modular systems of PC/104 embedded control modules, ISA bus systems, STD bus systems, and the high-performance VXI bus for instrumentation systems. Each section dedicated to the four standards contains some general and technical information, FAQs, related Internet and engineering resources in addition to vendors and product information. Though there are some worthwhile data on the site, it appears that they might not be fulfilling their potential, with a significant amount of empty pages. There is, however, a large database of employment opportunities (though with no indication of how current the information is), and a facility to post job requirements.

The Readout Instrumentation Signpost

The Readout (Ireland's Journal of Instrumentation and Control) server primarily provides access links to resources related to instrumentation and control. The site gives a news section, with each item illustrated via Internet links, lists of newsgroups and periodicals, a page on standards, including an award winning fieldbus page. Professional bodies and educational resources are covered and there is a large page of recruitment sources. An acronyms page provides a huge listing of relevant abbreviations and for light relief there are the poetry and virtual Irish pub pages. Also available at this site is the online version of the Readout Journal which appears every two months. The amount of information and links on the site is actually enormous, and is well worth bookmarking for any engineer in the fields of instrumentation or control.
