Robotic systems integrator appointed for machine tool sector

Mitsubishi Electric UK has announced the appointment of Yuasa Warwick Machinery as specialist integrator of Mitsubishi articulated robots for component handling applications in the machine tool industry throughout Britain and Ireland.

The CE-marked robots currently available are five- and six-axis models capable of carrying payloads up to 5kg, although robots of greater capacity will be introduced in the future and these too will be handled by Yuasa (see Plate 1).

Said Mitsubishi Electric's product manager, Simon Cassar, "There is synergy between many of our activities in the UK and those of Yuasa, and this agreement builds on the strong relationship which already exists between our two companies in Asia".

It is likely that early projects will involve automating Kira, Enshu, Takamaz and Wintec metalcutting machine tools marketed by Yuasa from its headquarters in Warwick. However, the agreement states that machine tools of any make may be similarly robotised.

Said Yuasa's factory automation division manager, Stuart Jackson, "A recent DTI report forecast that robotics would be one of the biggest growth markets over the next few years, so we are particularly pleased to enter this arena with such a prestigious product".

Mitsubishi Electric embarked on its programme of appointing integrators in vertical markets at the end of last year. Yuasa is the third and most recent to be appointed. The other two are Denford, which will serve the training sector, and Evershed Robotics which specialises in the automation industry.
