At the sharp end of industrial processes sits the Toshiba SR-HSP Series of Scara robots with up to five-axes capability (see Plate 6). These incredibly fast devices have achieved record-breaking traversing rates of 300mm in 0.63 seconds carrying a 2kg payload. The robot's reinforced arm can handle up to 20k at half-speed, or 10k at full speed.

These compact robots are also extremely accurate, offering repeatability to within ±0.02mm. Utilising state-of-the-art technology, the SR-HSP series uses parallel processing to offer smooth, fast motion combined with an extremely sophisticated set of control instructions to suit all applications.

The speed of the robot system does not end with the physical movements. The SR7000 robot controller integrates perfectly with the complementary Toshiba industrial automation equipment and is capable of simultaneously processing input and output signals during robot motion, so no time is wasted waiting for signal processing to be completed. The controller uses absolute encoder feedback rather than incremental signals, thereby obviating the need to implement a zero return on start up following a shut down.

The 32-bit controller is capable of controlling up to five axes simultaneously, with options for PTP, short-cut, linear interpolation and circular interpolation motion modes. With a total memory capacity of 6,400 points (12,800 steps), the controller also offers a multitask function, allowing a maximum of four tasks.

The mechanical movements of the Scara robots are controlled using Toshiba's own revolutionary digital servo motors, amplifiers and motion controllers. There are also teach and play features available for set up.
