Motoman's PlasmaWorld II-116HD for high definition plasma cutting: pre-engineered solution delivers low-cost, laser-like cutting

Keywords Motoman, Robots

The compact PlasmaWorld II-116HD (see Plate 3) is a pre-engineered, off-the-shelf plasma cutting solution which delivers low-cost, laser-like cutting of small parts. All system components are mounted on two common bases and shipped for easy installation, typically in a few hours. As a replacement to Motoman's PlasmaWorld 1000, this solution requires less floor space, and has a faster cycle time and a higher payload capacity.

The complete PlasmaWorld II-116HD solution features a UL-Listed Motoman SK16 robot and MRC controller with menu-driven plasma cutting application software, high tolerance plasma arc curing (HTPAC) package, heavy-duty 180° rotary positioner, operator interface, and total safety environment.

The slim base, waist, and arm design of the SK16 robot reduces potential interference areas and allows workpieces to be positioned closer to the robot, improving part accessibility. The SK16 robot has a 16 kg (35.2 lb) payload capacity, 1,555 mm (61.22 in) reach, and ±0.1 mm (±0.004 in) repeatability. Its six-axis design makes it a flexible solution that easily cuts contoured parts. ClearCut software simplifies the programming for holes and rectangles with cut files that specify cut parameters such as cutting speeds and dimensional information.

The HTPAC package provides high quality cutting at speeds over 100 inches per minute, and cuts mild steel from light gauge to half-inch thick plates. Cut edges are virtually dross-free and near laser quality in terms of squareness and smoothness, often eliminating secondary operations. Precise control of the power source current minimizes the chemical and thermal shock of the electrode which dramatically increases the number of arc starts from the consumables.

The PlasmaWorld II-116HD features the Motoman 2-position, 180° rotary MR300 positioner with 60" dia. table, 300 kg (660 lb) per side weight capacity, and a 4-sec average index time. This positioner allows the operator to safely load and unload parts from one side of the positioner (outside the workcell) while the robot automatically welds the parts on the opposite side, maximizing productivity. The total safety environment features redundant electrical interlocks, complete barrier guarding, protective arc curtains, single point operator control, and safety mats to inhibit positioner index cycle when the operator is standing on them.

The PlasmaWorld II-116HD is one in a family of fully integrated, standardized plasma cutting solutions and is backed by the MotoMax III warranty, Motoman's industry-leading, three-year warranty.
