UK leader in automated systems, ABB Flexible Automation, has launched a state-of-the-art coating robot solution, the IRB 580, specifically aimed at cutting customer production costs and improving finished component quality (see Plate 5).

The IRB 580 not only achieves consistently even paint film build, but helps produce parts with a higher quality finish at lower cost.

Compact, fast and accurate, with excellent handling capacity, the IRB 580 is ideal for around-the-clock operation in a wide range of applications including the automotive (metal and plastics), mobile telephone and electronics industries.

The IRB 580 is available in two versions - with 1,220mm or 1,620mm horizontal arm options - featuring a versatile hollow-wrist with full ±140 degree working range.

A fully integrated closed loop process system (IPS) permits high speed control of paint and airflow, while ultra-efficient motors, motor drives and transmission technology give the IRB 580 impressive speed and acceleration.

Position resolvers are integrated within the robot's motors, therefore commutation is not required, resulting in a slim arm design and a reduced requirement for access. The slimness of the arm gives additional benefits, including low air disturbance and easy access for paint hose installation.

The IRB 580 is controlled by the world renowned ABB S4P robot controller, used throughout the ABB range of industrial paint robots. The S4P manages robot motion and paint process control through a single integrated system, while its widespread use provides common spare parts, reduced engineering and commissioning time, simplified training and reduced maintenance.

ABB provides flexible, bespoke solutions for surface industries including robots and atomisers, spray booths and paint handling equipment. Proven standardised technology provides high-quality finish for all powder, solvent and waterborne paint processes, however complex the product shape. Solutions also include dedicated processes to deal with difficult materials, such as glaze, enamel, shield material and adhesives.

ABB Flexible Automation aims to provide competitive advantage for its customers through an extensive range of robotic solutions serving the manufacturing, process and engineering industries.
