This book aims to provide the theoretical background required by practising opticians to complement their experiences from the shop floor. It is an extensive source of optical methods, techniques, facts, data and definitions which makes it suitable as a useful reference for the master optician, manufacturing, process and quality engineers and the shop manager.

Chapter 1 gives detailed descriptions of a range of materials used in modern optical fabrication, including optical glass, low expansion materials, IR materials and optical crystals.

Chapters 2 and 3 cover Material production, and Forms of supply and optical shop supplies, respectively. Topics addressed include: optical glass making, growth methods for optical crystals, loose abrasives and polishing compounds.

The tools and fixtures that are required for optical fabrication are described in chapter 4, while chapter 5 addresses Optical fabrication - methods and machines. This chapter is the focus of the book and discusses shaping and milling operations, grinding and polishing machines, cleaning of optics and thin film coatings.

The final chapter of the book discusses the methods and instruments used for optical shop testing.

Overall Fabrication Methods for Precision Optics is a superbly written book which is informative, contains useful illustrations and is easy to understand.
