"Let's twist again" with the latest rotating electrical joint

Keywords: Electrical, Assembly

IDM Electronics introduces the Twist Capsule Assembly, a high-performance alternative to cable wrap assemblies or slip rings in limited angle applications where long life and reliability are important (see Plate 4).

Twist capsules use flexible circuit technology as the internal medium, allowing dense mechanical packaging and very low (and predictable) torque contributions. This technology provides an exceptionally long life and avoids the use of sliding contacts that generate dynamic electrical noise. They are suitable for installations requiring a limited excursion angle, making them particularly suitable for demanding applications such as electro-optical sensors, servo-systems on elevator axis, robotics and machine tools. With a life that can extend beyond 10 million cycles, they have even been used in deep space where reliability is critical.

Twist capsules can be engineered to meet demanding electrical performance characteristics – for example, stringent circuit to circuit cross-talk requirements or tightly controlled internal impedance values on critical circuits. High current, high voltage and low voltage circuits can all be accommodated into the design.

Twist capsules are available in a wide range of sizes and capacities. While there is a range of semi-standard products, twist capsules are usually engineered to suit a specific application and customers are invited to contact IDM Electronics with details of their requirements.

Twist capsule assemblies offer the user outstanding reliability and long life; they are designed using the latest CAD/CAM equipment and manufactured using the most advanced techniques. They provide the user with optimum performance and reliability across a wide range of commercial, industrial and military applications.
