Special rotating jaws for heavy loads

Keywords: Handling, Assembly, Grippers

As a consequence of its marketing link-up with Sommer Automatic, the German precision workholder, Leader Grippers, Chertsey, UK, brings a revolutionary design for handling and assembling heavy parts to the UK market.

Sommer engineers have succeeded in combining heavy-duty rotating jaws with parallel grippers to drastically reduce cycle times and increase productivity for robots and similar automatic assembly machines.

These special rotating jaws are capable of handling loads as diverse as motor blocks, electric motors, blocks of marble and even coiled steel (see Plate 9).

Plate 9 Heavy-duty rotating jaws

Two types of jaw are available, a 90° model and a 180° model, either hydraulically or pneumatically driven. Both can safely carry loads of up to 23Nm, while maintaining a repeatability factor of ± 0.01°.

In addition, the use of industrial strength shock absorbers ensures a smooth approach to the desired final positions.

Due to their compact build, these shock absorbers can be readily attached to the rotating jaws, despite the high energy absorption requirement. Interference problems with protrusions and similar obstacles are virtually eliminated.
