Cam operated parallel gripper up to 54mm total law stroke

Cam operated parallel gripper up to 54mm total law strokeKeywords: Grippers

Now available from Leader Grippers, Chertsey, is an airpowered, heavy-duty device that offers a high degree of flexibility for users of robots and other automated assembly machines, particularly when dealing with sizeable, fragile components.

Manufactured by German workholding specialist, Sommer Automatic, the unit is a cleverly designed parallel gripper that features a centrally located opening and closing cam mechanism to enable a total jaw opening movement of 54mm (see Plate 2).

Called the GP 500, the model features a closing force of 1,190N with an open/close time of 0.3/0.3sec and a repeatability of 0.05mm.

Construction of the housing and jaws is from dark grey anodised aluminium to resist corrosion, while the moving parts are manufactured in hardened steel and bronze.

Leader also supplies a more powerful variant of the model designed only for external clamping operations – the GP 500S.

On this model the 50mm stroke is made up of two parts. The cam mechanism is designed to deliver the first 45mm on the opening stroke and the remaining 5mm on the closing movement. It is during the closing period that the force increases to its potential of 3,000N.
