Safely handling delicate and fragile components on automated assembly lines is said to be made easier and more convenient with an array of suction devices now available from Leader Grippers, London, UK (Plate 2).

Manufactured by gripper specialist, Sommer Automatic, Germany, the range includes more than 15 different styles in a vast number of sizes, even catering for components as small as 1mm diameter.

Leader says that Sommer's suction cup programme embraces the majority of standard requirements. However, non-standard and unusual designs can be produced to meet individual specifications.

The selection consists of oval cups, mini-cups, flat and bellow type configurations, spring-loaded versions, knobbed cups, Torous cups and vacuum plates.

In general, Neoprene is the standard material of construction, but heat-resistant silicon and special materials approved for food handling are available if required.

Numerous accessories are available from Leader Grippers to complement these suction cups, including a variety of vacuum generators, vacuum pumps and switching valves.
