Note from the publisher

Emerald, the new name and vision for MCB UP Ltd

For 2002 the publisher of Industrial Robot will be changing its trading name from MCB UP Ltd to Emerald. You may wonder why! It is to reflect the success of our Emerald database – our electronic database which, along with much other material, contains current and archival content of this journal.

As a reader you will almost certainly know the Emerald name because electronic usage of the material contained in our journals has doubled every year since 1996 and the trend continues. During 2000, more than 5.5 million articles were delivered to users – that is over 16,000 articles every day.

But why are we telling you this? Well, partly to explain why this journal will look different in 2002 and why it will carry a new logo. We will be introducing a new logo and giving all our titles a new cover design for 2002 to reflect the Emerald brand. More importantly however, frequently users of material published in our journals are also potential authors. So, if you are thinking of submitting an article for an Emerald journal in 2002 please be assured that you will have the full reach of the Emerald database on your side to ensure that your work reaches the widest, global audience.

Forthcoming volume

Industrial Robot has always had a policy of working extensively with authors to ensure that their contributions are tailored to suit the joint academic and industrial readership, with a strong emphasis being placed on practical application and commercial benefit.

Plans to expand the Editorial Advisory Board throughout 2002 will allow the Editor to call on an even broader range of expertise to assist authors to maximise the quality of their contributions and thereby ensure that both Features and Research Articles are of the highest possible standard.

Academic papers will continue to be extensively reviewed by both academic and industrial EAB members to ensure that they are accessible to the majority of our readers and also that they meet the highest standards of academic rigour.

In 2002, Industrial Robot will continue to publish up-to-date coverage of international activities that relate to the design and application of industrial and service robots, and as always each issue will focus on a particular theme. The themes planned for the 2002 volume are:

  • Issue 1. Pharmaceutical industry. Covering drug discovery, laboratory analysis and handling dangerous substances.

  • Issue 2. Welding and glueing. This issue includes spot, arc and laser welding and adhesive application.

  • Issue 3. Exploration and inspection and walking robots. This issue will focus on robots for exploration, search and rescue and remote inspection, and also biped walking robots.

  • Issue 4. Semiconductor industry and LCD manufacture and high precision. Covering applications and recent developments in the use of robots within the semiconductor industry, including LCD manufacture. Also printed circuit board assembly of awkward components.

  • Issue 5. Printing and actuators. Includes spray painting robots and cleaning robots, and "soft" actuation mechanisms that are able to contact their surroundings without damage. Also, full arm force feedback and contact sensing.

  • Issue 6. Automotive industry. This issue will focus on robot applications within the automotive industry and associated component suppliers, concentrating on assembly.

If you are interested in submitting a paper for any of the above issues, or if you have any questions or comments regarding Industrial Robot, or any other Emerald titles, please contact Sharon Parkinson. E-mail: sparkinson@emeraldinsight.com
